New Renovations Made at Shawnee State Park

Ohio Department of Natural Resources

Glen Cobb, ODNR deputy director and chief of parks, and I went to the Changing of the Guard for the Huntington District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in West Virginia last Friday. Col. Steven McGugan assumed command of the Huntington District from Col. Robert Peterson. The Huntington District area includes 311 navigable miles of the Ohio River in Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky; it is also comprised of 45,000 square miles in Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia and North Carolina.

On the drive back to Columbus, we visited Shawnee State Park in West Portsmouth. The Shawnee Lodge and Conference Center is located within the 63,000-acre Shawnee Forest, which is the largest of Ohio’s 21 state forests. Lodge rooms as well as the cabins were recently refurbished at Shawnee State Park, and I was very impressed with the renovations. I also took a tour of the golf course—it’s beautiful. I can’t wait to come back for a weekend golf outing. If you are near Scioto County in southern Ohio or are just looking for an Ohio-based and inexpensive family excursion, definitely check out what’s available for accommodations and recreation at Shawnee State Park.
